A short story about us
UpTop Arts was founded in 2024 after recognising the need for more affordable and accessible cultural events celebrating Caribbean culture, especially dancehall dance, in London. Working closely with UpTop Dance School, we aim to bring the community together by organising events, parties and activities that celebrate Caribbean culture and create opportunities for dancehall practitioners to connect, share and develop.
In 2024, we also founded UpTop Arts Youth Company, one of the few youth dance companies dedicated to dancehall, offering young people aged 10–16 the opportunity to train, perform and develop their skills.
Our vision
Our mission is to make Caribbean culture, especially dancehall dance, more accessible by providing affordable events and opportunities for people from different backgrounds to participate and engage with the culture.
We want to support local dancehall practitioners, Caribbean artists, DJs and vendors, while also creating opportunities for those outside the dancehall scene who are connected to Caribbean culture. Through our events, we aim to bring different communities together, encourage collaboration and provide opportunities for the younger generation to develop their passion for dance.
Looking towards the future, our ambition is to follow in the footsteps of hip-hop theatre and bring dancehall onto theatre stages, exploring its potential as a form of storytelling and artistic expression while preserving its Jamaican roots.
